Public Portion of TORCH Conference Schedule Announced

It is now less than 6 weeks until the TORCH Anti-Fascist Network national conference here in Philly. So finish your travel preparations if you are coming from out of town and send in your registration information. The public section of the conference will take place the afternoon and evening of Saturday November 7th at The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) in West Philly. We are very excited about all public events.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is contuing to be denied the medical care that he needs to survive his stay in prison at SCI-Mahone in Frackville, PA.

Hepatitis C is a dangerous liver disease which is growing among poor people and especially rampant in prisons. Mumia found himself diagnosed with Hep-C, as well as type-II diabetes and other medical circumstances, in August of this year. Drugs released within the last 18 months show remarkable cure-rates of 90-95%, but based on costs of $60-85K for a 12 week course, jail and prison authorities here (and in jails and prisons across the U.S.) are denied the incarcerated access to them.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has complained that “…there’s no opportunity for dialogue” after members of the Philly Coalition for Real Justice (PCxRJ) and Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee/Action Against Black Genocide (TMOC/AABG) disrupted a meeting he was speaking at last week.

He’s absolutely right: our tactics are designed to force him to do something he doesn’t want to do; they’re intended as a demonstration of power, an act of war against an enemy, not a gesture of civility in a barbarous system.

From Black Mask to Up Against the Wall Motherfucker: A discussion with Ben Morea

A former member of the New York-based groups Black Mask and Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, Ben Morea will discuss his involvement with anarchist activity in the 1960s.

With Black Mask, Morea published a paper that explored the relationship between radical politics and art as well as initiating various incursions and interventions. With Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, Morea developed the concept of affinity groups for protests and direct action alongside of experimenting with breakaway marches. This discussion will be an opportunity to ask Morea about his experiences and learn from how these groups creatively adapted to the political struggle and State repression of the 60s.

Ben Morea, a former major activist and revolutionary artist in the 60’s will speak on his journey from approaching activism from a place or anarchy to now coming from values of animism. He is well known historically from the 60’s for his involvement in Black Mask, Up against the wall Mother fucker, and his art. He left society for many years, spending time deep in nature, only to reemerge to speak all over the world around the ties between environmentalism and animism. This will be a special night at ahimsa as we enjoy the warm hearted and wise nature of Ben Morea as he speaks on his many years of standing up for and loving mother nature and her inhabitants.

An International Panel Discussion

This panel brings together organizers from Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and North America to discuss the significance of anarchist ideas and tactics in the 21st century.

The participants will compare experiences from the wave of protests and uprisings that has swept the world since 2010—exploring the role of demand-based politics in both catalyzing and limiting movements, examining a variety of forms of repression, and critically evaluating experiments with direct democracy. They will conclude by assessing the prospects of contemporary struggles for self-determination in an era of globalized capitalism and state control.

Protestors interrupt Philadelphia Police Commissioner Ramsey during community relations speech

Protestors interrupted a speech by Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey Tuesday night.

They shouted down the commissioner during an event at Eastern State Penitentiary which was actually on the topic of improving police relations with the community in the wake of Baltimore, Ferguson and Staten Island.

Commissioner Ramsey at first tried joking, then waiting them out, but their chants continued, even as he left.

The demonstrators continued outside, calling for justice for Brandon Tate-Brown and others.

Tate-Brown was shot to death by police officers last December in Mayfair, but the officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.

There will be a picket line between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. at the request of Aljebu-Lan (Key) Marcus and Attorney J Wyndal Gordon, who are urging that the community do as much as possible to bring publicity to his case. If you cannot attend because of work or other difficulties please call States Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office to ask that all charges be dropped @ 443-984-6000 or email mail@stattorney.org,
The State has been adding charges to many of the defendants and Marcus now has additional charges of resisting arrest and interfering with an arrest on top of disorderly and failure to obey.
Both Marcus and Malachi are members of the Philly Coalition for Real Justice. Malachi is also a member of Action Against Black Genocide and Marcus is a member of the Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee. They were both arrested during the Saturday, April 25th protest in downtown Baltimore.
The State has been adding charges based on a horrific witch hunt of protesters and youth in the community so in many cases charges continue to change. At their last court date, the judge was handing out jail sentences on disorderly conduct charges, many times on very, very small charges to people who simply were in the wrong place at the wrong time. In addition, many of these defendants had very poor legal counsel.
We need to continue to demand AMNESTY FOR ALL YOUTH!

Based on the events leading to the death of Oscar Grant, a young man who was killed in 2009 by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California. Flashbacks reveal the last day in Oscar’s life, in which he accompanied his family and friends to San Francisco to watch fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and, on the way back home, became swept up in an altercation with police that ended in tragedy.

Antifa Philadelphia will be hosting a short informational event/fundraiser for southern Antifascists Stephen Loughman of Virginia and Eddien Patterson of South Carolina, who are facing legal repression for their alleged involvement in routing the Klan and Nazis in Charleston in July. We will show a few short videos about the events surrounding his arrest and then collect some money for their legal support.

There will be food and Antifa merch for sale as well, including brand new Philly Antifa t-shirts.

“On Monday, July 27th, our friend and comrade, Stephen Loughman, was arrested and charged with “breach of peace” for his support the week before at an anti-KKK rally in Columbia, SC on July 18th, 2015. Local activists had called on folks from across the southern region to help South Carolina’s communities stand against the Klan and other hate groups, who like many groups were trying to use the Confederate flag debate as a recruitment tool.
