Monday, October 1st: Letter-writing to Commute the Sentences of the Virgin Island 3

It’s time for our monthly letter-writing event again, but this time with a twist as the campaign to free the Virgin Island 3 kicks into high gear. Join us at LAVA at 6:30 pm for snacks and drafting letters to Governor Mapp and the Virgin Island 3, who have been locked up for 46 years. Like many aging prisoners, they are experiencing increasing health problems and pose NO RISK to the society they’ve been locked away from for nearly half a century. Because Governor Mapp’s term is ending and he is up for re-election this November, *now* is the time to contact him to urge for commutation of their sentences. This is it; all hands on deck!

 

How you can help:

1) Write a letter [ideally mail it the first week of October]

Please start by writing a letter to the Governor. This is also a good time to urge folks you know who care about social justice to get on board with this campaign!

Introduce yourself. This could include comments about your job, family or work in the community.

Explain how you know their cases and/or how you may know them personally.

Explain why you are concerned (if you are from the VI, explain how this affects your vote and if you are from elsewhere explain how commuting their sentences would positively influence society or your view of the VI).

Some Issues are:
1. Length of time in prison
2. Their deteriorating medical conditions
3. Aging and getting old
4. No community threat (example: while they were housed in the St. Croix, they were actually allowed to go out in the community to religious services, sometimes unsupervised, with no issues)

Implore the Governor to commute their sentences. Explain that you understand that he eluded to this before he was elected and at the beginning of his term.

Leave messages urging Governor Mapp to make good on his promise to free the Virgin Island 3 – Warren Ballantine, Meral Smith and Beaumont Gereau (these are the names the state recognizes them under)- by commuting their sentences and releasing them with time served.

A few talking points if desired, but feel free to keep it short and sweet:
• After 46 years of incarceration, they are of seriously ailing health and are extremely unlikely to re-offend… Warren alone is on 6 different types of medication after a massive heart attack a year ago.
• It is costing the state a TON of money to continue to house them and pay for medical care.

Keep up the pressure throughout November or until their sentences are commuted! When you can, drop one or all of the Virgin Island 3 a note telling them about the actions you took on their behalf. You can also read about the campaign in Malik’s own words.

Keystone United Exposed Day 15: Jason Tankersley

Jason Tankersley, longtime neo-nazi and co-founder of Maryland Skinheads. Tankersley is also a Keystone State Skinheads and Keystone United supporter.

Jason Tankersley is the 37 year-old (DOB 5/9/81) founder of Maryland Skinheads and a longtime neo-nazi who, in the past few years, has attempted to rehabilitate his image. Maryland Skinheads, or MDS, has always been a small crew with longstanding ties to Keystone State Skinheads.

Both crews appeared together in a National Geographic documentary in 2008 training and working together. Keystone United’s music festival, Uprise Fest, which ran for several years, was co-promoted with Label 56, a white power label run by MDS co-founder Clemie Haught. Uprise routinely featured Label 56 bands. Because of the discrepancy in size, MDS has largely functioned as a chapter of KSS for most of it’s existence.

Tankersley was a nazi long before MDS or KSS were founded, participating in rallies by the National Alliance, The Aryan Nations and the KKK, among others white power groups. Tankersley was present at the 2004 Aryan Nations and National Socialist Movement rally in Valley Forge, PA where Anti-Fascists turned away large portions of the crowd and a few nazis got smashed.

Tankersley was with Joe Phy and other KSS and MDS members when they harassed a Pride event in Philly with homophobic slurs and nazi salutes in 2006.

MDS members, including Tankersley, attacked Anti-Fascists in a Food Lion parking lot in Western Maryland when the two groups encountered each other on the way to a KKK rally on Antietam battlefield, also in 2006.

Tankersley is a former amateur boxer who now trains MMA out of his gym, Exile Fitness, in Rosedale, MD.  In many pictures above, you can see Tankersley wearing Exile branded clothing.

As we mentioned, Tankersley has attempted to rehabilitate his image in recent years. He has covered up his more inflammatory tattoos, and trains a diverse group of students which includes POC and women.  It also, however, sometimes includes fellow MDS members and other nazis.

However, Tankersley has not cut any ties with MDS, KSS, or the far right. Tankersley continues to attend KSS events and actions. He still promotes far right racists like Tommy Robinson, founder of the nazi-infested “English Defense League.” He just doesn’t seem to take issues with collecting money from POC while buddying up with the same group whose members allegedly threatened to “exterminate every black one by one” during their racist assault in Avalon, PA this summer.

If someone wants to leave the nazi life behind, we support that. However, you cannot continue to materially and rhetorically support a neo-nazi organization like KSS/KU and expect hanging out with fellow far right fascists who happen to be POC like Jimi Yamamoto of the band Total Annihilation to insulate you from the label nazi. Jimi Yamamoto is known for hanging out with nazis. Nazis have a long history of excusing politically aligned individuals who validate their ideology by conforming to so-called “white” and “male” behaviors and sensibilities.

As for Tankersley’s business catering to people of all ethnicity, you can miss us on that shit. Taking someone’s money and turning around and donating it to a group that believes the United States belongs to white people (and control of it belongs to white men specifically) is a racist act, period.

It is unlikely that Tankersley’s students are all totally unaware of his history, and probable that he has spun them his own tale of redemption where he realized what matters is being a far right nationalist who supports “traditional” gender power dynamics and racial homogenization, regardless of WHICH race. However, we are still asking our readers to visit the Exile MMA Facebook page and remind them that by supporting Tankersley and his gym, they are supporting Maryland Skinheads, Keystone United and other far right racist groups and causes. There are already several unhappy reviews related to Tankerly fat-shaming and bullying a teenage girl as an internet troll.

In 2017, a large scale uprising was launched at the Vaughn Correctional Institution in DE. 17 prisoners are being accused of orchestrating the uprising, 16 of which are facing murder charges for the death of a corrections officer during the riot.

On October 8th the first trial will begin at the Leonard L. Williams Justice Center in Wilmington, DE. Let’s pack the court, write letters, and show support for the Vaughn 17 as they face state repression in the wake of a recent hunger strike and as they face trial.

Keystone United Exposed Day 14: David Phillips and Peggy Caterino

David Phillips and Peggy Caterino are longtime neo-nazis and Keystone United affiliates living in Philadelphia. Phillips is also a Keystone State Skinheads member. Phillips first hit our radar after one of his nazi “brothers” gouged his eyes out during a horrific assault in his home in 2012, stemming from jealousy related to Phillips offering to take “his girlfriend” out while the other nazi was in jail. See, that’s the shit our side just don’t do. Don’t believe false equivalencies, folks.

At the time, Phillips was a member of the notorious train-wreck of a nazi crew, Aryan Terror Brigade, led by Josh “I had racist tattooed on my forehead” Steever until Steever was kicked out under allegations of being an informant. Steever even posted on Stormfront at the time claiming that Antifa were responsible for the assault on Phillips in an attempt to get donations. However, Phillips was definitely also associating with KSS at that time.

Phillips has a long history of criminal charges for things such as ethnic intimidation, weapons and drug possession, robbery and assault.

Associations with Phillips and Aryan Terror Brigade is just another piece of proof that KSS’ media-friendly image of “non-violent white nationalist activists” is total bullshit. ATB members were involved in an attack on a South Asian family in East Brunswick,NJ on New Year’s Eve 2011, and a splinter group from ATB, Aryan Strike Force, which includes Steever, are currently being indicted for planning to send a suicide bomber into the Antifa protest of the National Socialist Movement rally in Harrisburg, PA in 2016. The very same rally that Keystone State Skinheads was helping run security for because it included their close ally Matthew Heimbach. Tell us again how Antifa are terrorists?

Despite being blinded for life, Phillips doubled down on White Supremacy and joined KSS. Phillips has entered a domestic partnership with Peggy Caterino, another neo-nazi and active supporter of Keystone United. Caterino was present at the nazi band The Blue Eyed Devil’s show that Keystone United just put on in in Central PA on Sept. 15th.

Brian Carlton Herb is a neo-nazi member of Blood and Honour USA and Keystone United supporter living in Pennsylvania. He is 45 years old.

Herb does not seem to be much of a presence at demonstrations but is a regular at the social events put on by Blood and Honour and Keystone United. It is important not to discount the value of these events. As we discussed in our intro article to this series, Keystone United and Blood and Honour use them as social lubricant when practicing entryism into more mainstream conservative circles as well as simultaneously recruiting from those circles.

Herb was convicted in 2000 for possession of materials to manufacture narcotics and sentenced to 7 days to 18 months. He was convicted of assault in 2006. Herb was accused of leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license in 2013. He was charged last year with driving under the influence, possession, and driving without a license, among other traffic charges.

Herb was sentenced just this month to 3 days to 6 months in Northumberland County jail. Herb’s last known address is 867 W. Spruce St., Coal Township, PA. We are asking our readers to send us any additional info they have on Herb, especially related to his criminal case and his employment.

Christopher Croumbley is a 38 year old neo-nazi and associate of the Keystone State Skinheads and Keystone United.  His partner, Corina Drennen, is a Keystone United supporter.

Croumbley appears to be something of a late-in-life nazi. He is from PA originally, and spent some time in Florida, but he had been living in Tennessee with his ex wife as of 3 years ago. In pics from that time, he does not exactly cut the image of a typical bonehead.

In late 2016 into 2017, Croumbley began posting nazi and racist images on Facebook, was spotted at Keystone United events, including in March of this year, when they were reduced to holding a flash demo at the state house in Harrisburg. Croumbley was also in attendance at Leif Erikson Day last year in Philly and was involved in the brutal attack on 2 Anti-Racists in FDR park.

Croumbley recently shoved and accosted someone for wearing an Anti-Fascist t-shirt and pins outside Chameleon Club in Lancaster. He is friendly with at least one of the bouncers at the club, and was also overheard to claim his partner “owns the Shamrock Cafe in Lancaster, PA.” and that he “lives right next door to it.” Anti-Racists in the Lancaster area should be careful of these locations. We believe it is likely he is probating for KSS, but that is not confirmed.

His partner is Corina Drennen, who is the daughter of Shamrock Cafe owner Eileen Drennen. Corina is fully aware and supportive of Croumbley’s association with KSS, and is a KSS supporter herself. Her last known address is 2209 Columbia Ave, Lancaster PA.

Solidarity and Healing in the Revolutionary Movement

On a rainy Sunday afternoon in early September we came together to reflect on the trauma that we experienced at the hands of the State this summer (and in general). All of us have been involved in the turbulent street protests that happened over the summer and so far this fall, including the Occupy ICE encampments, the Anti-Blue Lives Matter march, actions in solidarity with the prison strike, etc. Although we all knew each other–some before this summer, others as a result of this summer–there was one person, experienced with therapeutic practice, who most of us met for the first time. This person facilitated the discussion and did a great job doing so. It’s important to have people with this kind of expertise.

Besides talking about and processing our personal experiences with state violence, we also talked about how to foster a political culture that prioritizes mental health care alongside other kinds of work–legal, medical, food, study, writing, research, agitation, street tactics, intelligence gathering, etc. To this end, there should be a collective of people with skills in the mental health field who make their expertise available to those experiencing post-traumatic stress. And this collective should not just be providing their skills, but helping people develop these skills themselves, so that the skills can generalize. We talked about how at a leftist camp for children this summer, for example, there was the concept of the Care Commune, in which caring for each other was meant to be part of everyday camp life, which was primarily devoted to intense theoretical discussion and debate. This included collectivized childcare, artistic activities, meditation sessions, live action role playing, a talent show, and a general spirit of the Care Commune.

It’s crucial to cultivate a space where people are encouraged to be intentionally vulnerable and to reflect on state violence in a freely associative manner. It wasn’t until some of us took part in this meeting that we even began to think about the trauma we had experienced, which we tend to repress and disassociate from. One person didn’t even realize that they had had a panic attack at a protest earlier that week, until they started to share what they were feeling.

Regularly checking in with each other before, during, and after actions, not only about mental health, but also to consider the effectiveness of our strategy and tactics, is all connected. Mental health shouldn’t be an afterthought, but a central part of what we do as revolutionaries. A revolutionary movement will inevitably experience violence and trauma from the police, prison guards, and other armed agents of Capital. If such a movement is to succeed, it will need to address and process the question of trauma and the mental-health problems that arise from it, simultaneously as it challenges state-power.

So where do we go from here?

Here are some suggestions:

  1. This group should meet regularly to engage in such a practice and open up homes for meals/social gatherings not necessarily centered around an action or specific political goal.
  2. Hangouts/check ins before and after actions. Establish post demo space for anyone not wanting to be alone.
  3. Probe personal connections for community care resources in effort to offer them to people coping with mental/physical distress related to political actions.
  4. Reach out to elders who have experienced state violence in order to learn skills and to normalize trauma affects in relation to state violence.

Let us work together to begin this work of Liberation in ourselves and in our communities!

Keystone United Exposed Day 11: Terrence Raymond Stockey

Terrence “Terry” Stockey is a neo-nazi associate of Keystone United. Stockey is one of the 6 KSS members, associates and supporters being charged for Ethnic Intimidation and Assault relating to a targeted attack against a Black man at a bar in Avalon, PA this summer.

Stockey’s last known address is 521 Roseland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, though he may have relocated to Beaver, PA. Stockey is 40 years old and claims to work as an electrician.

 

Stockey keeps his nazi affiliations relatively understated, but if you scratch the surface you can find evidence. He is Facebook friends with Shane Dilling, a Pittsburgh KSS member. He made a Google+ account that he quickly abandoned, but not before leaving this gem.

For the uninitiated, 1488 is a common numerical code for neo-nazis. 14 is a reference to “The 14 Words,” a slogan among Nazis coined by David Lane, who was a member of the nazi insurgent group The Order. The Order committed robberies, counterfeiting, murders and bombings in their quest to “bring total victory to the Aryan Race.” The 14 words are “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” 88 is a code for HH, or Heil Hitler.

We are calling on our readers in that area to help make Dilling’s neighbors (in whatever way they feel safe) aware that he is a longtime neo-nazi organizer with a recent history of violent assaults. Keep in mind that Dilling and associates are very violent, though potentially their current charges could dissuade them from unprovoked attacks.

SCI Chester Prison Strike Banner Drop

Some anarchists dropped a banner reading “#PRISON STRIKE – FREE ALL PRISONERS” off the parking garage for the casino next to SCI Chester. Timing was good, and there were folks in the yard of the prison when we dropped it. Hopefully people both in the yard and in the dorms facing the banner saw it clearly, and felt some sense of the solidarity we hoped to communicate.

The PA Dept of Corrections is currently imposing severe restrictions on those it holds captive, including absurd rerouting of all mail through a private corporation in Florida, increased security screening for visitors, and soon, implementing a system where inmates will only have access to e-books after buying devices with which to read them at their own expense.

Considering this, we gotta figure out more creative ways to communicate with people inside while escalating on the outside. Like, actually escalating on the outside.

Keystone United Exposed Day 8: Timothy Wylie

“Tim Wylie was convicted of 3 separate firearms felonies and sentenced on January 16th to 2-4 years in SCI Camp Hill and 3 years state probation to run concurrent with confinement. As of August 7, 2018, he is confined at Quehanna Boot Camp.”

Tim Wylie is a neo-nazi member of Keystone State Skinheads and Keystone United. Wylie joined KSS more recently, in the past few years. Wylie was present when KSS was providing security for the National Socialist Movement demo in Harrisburg 2 years ago. He also attends all their social events such as their Yule and St. Patrick’s Day parties. Wylie was present at Leif Erikson Day in Philly last fall.

Wylie was arrested in 2016 for driving without a license while carrying a handgun with the serial number removed as a felon. KSS co-founder Bob Gaus started a fundrazr for Wylie, but it did not meet it’s goal.

His last known address was 6111 Blue Valley Ave, Harrisburg PA.  However, Wylie was convicted of three firearms felonies in January and began a 2-4 year sentence, and as of this writing is being house at Quehanna Boot Camp, a military style program run by the PA Department of Corrections.  Pretty lenient sentencing for a repeat offender just convicted of 3 firearms felonies.

Bryan and Patricia Vanagaitis are long time neo-nazis. Bryan is a member of both Keystone United and Keystone State Skinheads, Patricia is a KU member and KSS supporter. The two of them lived in Philly for many years, using a house they lived in on Ditman St. as a sort of home base for KSS, letting some of their members live there at times and used the house for meetings.

Back in 2014, after we finished running the klan out of Tacony (including recently sentenced klansman Richard Preston), we and some locals paid a visit to the house and held a home demo. A few weeks later they had left the city for Highspire, PA, located a few miles outside Harrisburg.

Vaughn 17 Update & a Call for Support

1. All of those who were previously held at Howard R. Young Correctional Facility have been moved to Sussex Correctional Facility. This means that all 17 of them are now together at the same facility. A poster with their updated addresses for writing can be found here. Do continue writing them letters of support as they have expressed many times that it really boosts their morale.

2. While they are excited to be reunited with one another, they have also been experiencing new and intensified forms of repression since their relocation. This repression has led them to go on a recent hunger strike and they are asking for support in the wake of retaliation. An excerpt from a letter received from one of the Vaughn 17 states:

“Despite the appreciation and healing of being able to see my codefendants faces again after the struggles and suffering we endured together at J.T.V.C.C., I believe this transition has turned out for the worst. Why? Because since the arrival of my other codefendants the administration has switched our rec schedule to where we’re only getting an hour and a half every other day unlike the hour and a half we used to get every single day. So basically, our rec hours were literally cut in half from getting ten and a half hours a week to six and a half or four and a half hours a week. Not only is this rec schedule in contrary to CLASI (Community Legal Aid Society Incorporated, CLASI vs. Robert M. Coupe, 2016 US District, Lexis 237 28* 2017 WL 1055741), of what’s supposed to be implemented, but this is a retaliation attack against us. The moment ths new rec schedule was activated we addressed the warden to his face that this wasn’t gong to work. His response was “give me two weeks.” Fourteen of us waited patiently for two weeks and nothing got done, instead we were spinned and lied to as usual. To avoid any more lies and to get what we’re entitled as prisoners, we came together and organized a hunger strike. After about 2-3 days on the hunger strike, staff came to negotiate. Despite us having multiple requests that were reasonable, our man focus was rec because certain people were unable to call their families and attorneys because of the times we came out. After stressing our reasons for rec change to staff, they agreed to change t that following Monday as long as we came off of hunger strike. As a group, we agreed to get off hunger strike for the purpose of getting our new rec schedule. After that, they backdoored us with Class 1 demonstration infractions that carry 5 days hole, 10 days confinement of quarters, and 30 days loss of all privileges, and they still haven’t implemented the new rec schedule. Some already pled guilty to the infraction and some are in the process of appealing. We were hoping that you and your comrades can make a call to our judge and warden.”

3. A phone zap will take place on Monday, September 17th as per their request. A sample script with their demands as well as addresses and phone numbers can be found below. A shareable pdf can also be found here. The script below can also be used to write letters on their behalf.

“Hello, my name is —-, and I am contacting you about treatment of the 17 prisoners charged in connection with the uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, who are now being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution. What is their condition currently? Are they being punished for their hunger strike last month?

Additionally, I am calling to insist on seven demands by the 17 Vaughn prisoners.

1. Elimination of the demonstration write-up. Their hunger strike peacefully sought a basic right, which they were denied, namely, 10.5 hours of recreation time per week. It is unjust that they were punished for seeking what is rightfully theirs. The write-up must be eliminated and their rec time returned to 10.5 hours per week.

2. More phone-calls. The Vaughn prisoners are limited to being able to use the phone only once or twice a week, which is inadequate for dealing with the burden placed on them and their families as they face their upcoming trials. They demand phone access four times a week.

3. Visits: The Vaughn prisoners receive only 45 minutes of visitation time. Many visitors are travelling more than an hour and a half to SCI. As many of the Vaughn prisoners could be transferred across the country after their trials, the Vaughn prisoners are demanding that visitation time be increased to an hour and a half.

4. Law library: Two of the Vaughn prisoners will be representing themselves pro se at their trials. Their current access to the library is insufficient and obstructs their pursuit of justice. They need more physical access to the library or more paralegals honoring their requests.

5. Hotpot/Microwave: Given that many of staff who assaulted the Vaughn prisoners after the uprising work at SCI and have threatened them since, the Vaughn prisoners have reason to believe that their food is being tampered with. They demand microwaves or hotpots so that they can cook their own hot meals every day.

6. Property review: The Vaughn prisoners have reason to believe that their electrical appliances have been tampered with. Since they do not have electrical outlets, they cannot test them. They demand that their appliances be tested in front of them to make sure they work before they leave SCI.

7. Haircuts: The Vaughn prisoners demand that they receive haircuts before and throughout the duration of their upcoming trials so that they look well groomed and presentable.”
