Winter Cook-In and Reading and Visual Art Reception and Benefit

from Facebook

FOOD! FRIENDS! READERS! VISUAL ART!

Bundle up your winter britches and come out to South Philly for food, readers, visual art and music!

This event will be an occasion for people to fill their bellies, meet or re-connect with each other, check out some visual art pieces, and listen to some next level readers who will open up perspectives and spark discussions about what’s to be done in the present moment as well as the immediate and long-term future. There will be an open mic at the end of the readings for people to present their writings or thoughts, either prepared beforehand, in response to the readers, or thought up on the spot.

There will be food with vegan and gluten-free options. Just bring some money$ – no one will be turned away for lack of funds but there is a suggested donation of $5+ which will go toward legal fees for anti-inauguration protesters on January 20.

This is the first of what we hope will be more events which will take place both here and in other places across the city.

Food and art reception begins at 11am, readings start at 1pm sharp.

We unfortunately live in a world where this does not go without saying: This event will be held in a safer space – ableism, homophobia, misogyny, racism, transphobia, and other oppressive language or behavior will be confronted and their vessels booted.

Accessibility: Everything will take place on the first floor, which has a bathroom. There are two steps into the front door and people available to assist folks who need help getting in. If you have a question or feel that something more should be mentioned here, feel free to message a host! ♥

Announcing Philly Autonomous Anti-Repression Fund

Submission

https://phlautonomousantirepression.wordpress.com/

In today’s increasingly dark political climate, it is more important than ever to directly support people taking risks and going on the offensive against the misery of everyday life, whether as part of a broader political strategy or for reasons of everyday survival and self-defense. The PHL Autonomous Anti-Repression Fund aims to offer a safety net for people in Philadelphia who are limited in their ability to act because they lack resources for bail and other fees if something goes wrong.

This anti-repression fund is part of a broader project of building informal networks of care and resistance outside of non-profits and other organizations, which all too often have their own constraints about what they can and can’t support. We aim to support people and activities that are criminalized by the state while also unsupported by formal activist organizations and the mainstream public. The actions we support will not necessarily be planned, “political,” or contain a palatable message.

All donations to the anti-repression fund will go directly towards paying bail, bond, legal and/or medical fees following arrest. Your contributions will encourage and embolden people to do what they need to do to try to get free, knowing that other people have their back.

Please donate if you can, and spread the word!!

The Wooden Shoe’s 40th Birthday Party!

from Facebook

The Wooden Shoe is turning 40 years old! Come celebrate with us!

Wooden Shoe Books and Records first opened in December 1976. 40 years and two different locations later, the Shoe is one of the oldest radical bookstores in the country and continues to be run by a dedicated, all-volunteer collective.

On Wednesday December 7th, we are having a birthday party! We are inviting all staffers from the past, present, and future, along with our customers and supporters to come out and commemorate this milestone.

In this political moment of increasing authoritarianism, spaces like the Wooden Shoe are more vital than ever. Come have a drink or snack with us at Mom’s and help us continue well beyond our 40th year!

A percentage of the upstair bar sales will go directly to the Shoe. And we’ll have a playlist spinning for your listening enjoyment.

See you soon!

PS: Party starts at 9:00 and happy hour starts at 10:00.

SAVE LAVA FROM REAL ESTATE CHUMP

From gofundme

Help!!

LAVA Space is a grassroots organizing and media center located in the Belmont neighborhood of Philadelphia. For over two decades the space has served as a place for activist groups and communities to meet, eat and share art and music.

The LAVA collective was recently given notice that a lien for $1600 in unpaid taxes was placed on the property two years ago. This lien was purchased by a real estate developer who is now pressuring the city to put the property up for auction. The company has bought liens on other buildings in the neighborhood as well in an attempt to cheaply acquire as much property as they can. If this happens, LAVA along with many of the long-time residents of the Belmont neighborhood will most likely be pushed out to make room for an ever-expanding University City. In order to stop this from happening we need to come up with money to pay back the lien and any other out-standing debts we have before our court hearing on October 13. We will also need to cover lawyer fees and court costs, which is why we are asking for $2000.

LAVA was established to provide a meeting space and resources to a neighborhood with serious needs. The downstairs of the building houses a library, weekly produce distribution and an event space that gives a platform to artists and organizations from a wide range of backgrounds. The upstairs is used as affordable office space for groups fighting for social justice (Human Rights Coalition and Radio Prometheus) and the Shark Tank recording studio, which has become an important resource for young musicians in the community.

Please help keep LAVA from falling into the hands of a real estate developer by donating what you can and sharing this page with your networks.

Thanks!!!

Oaxaca Resiste Benefit/no Sun Shines Here Comp Release

from Facebook

There is a huge human rights violation happening right now in Oaxaca, Mexico. They are shooting students and teachers just because they disagree with the new education reform. We are trying to raise money for those in need of medicine, medical bills for the hundreds that have been injured and for the funeral expenses for those that have passed. The government is corrupt and is periodically targeting and killing innocent students and teachers. We need all the help we can get, and we need all of you.

This will also be a record release party for the “No sun shines here” comp full of all your favorite Philly bands on Ryvvolte Records.

Help Print and Distribute Fire to the Prisons #13

Submission

Help Print 10,000 Copies of Fire to the Prisons and Give Them out For Free!

In February 2015, we returned to publishing Fire to the Prisons. After a three year hiatus, we came back to this project with full force. Over a year later, we are happy to report that almost all of the 10,000 printed copies have been distributed across North America and abroad. Thanks to the support, donations, and contributions of comrades across the world, we were able to create a very loud voice.

Now, in 2016, we want to do it again.

We want to expand our coverage, scope, and  the reach of the publication while remaining true to the spirit of Fire to the Prisons. We will continue with our long term commitment to counter-information, original writing and content, and the amplification of the anti-authoritarian/anti-prison/anti-repression struggle that you have come to expect from us.

We will have both a domestic and international voice this issue. While remaining true to reporting on repression and anti-prison resistance across the states, Canada, and Mexico, we have committed articles from abroad promising insight on struggles and happenings that will help to bridge and unify an array of social tensions through a mutual awareness and solidarity.

We truly want FTTP to become a global publication and one that links anarchists and other autonomous combatants together in a dialog about the commonalities that we all face, as well as a discussion on the actions and struggles that we can all engage in.

We will be covering the resurgence of fascism in mainstream American politics, as well as updates on communities resisting further eco-devastation across the states. We have committed articles from prisoners domestic and international. We have commitments from NYC Anarchist Black Cross to use the project as a resource for raising awareness on repression and prisoner status in North America. We will also focus on the pacification of favelas in Brazil, the current reality and history of anarchist struggle in Chile, and the refugee situation in Greece. We will have further reports on anti-police struggle across the United States, and will be continuing a tradition of news on broader prisoner strikes across America since our last issue. We are also intent on original articles on indigenous resistance in western Canada. Plus accounts and updates of the struggle in Rojava and general Kurdistan. Also all our featured articles will be available in Spanish for free on our website.

We are a committed collective. We are prepared to invest a lot of time and energy into producing this project, but we ask any and all sympathetic readers to help us with printing and distribution. by donating to our funding page.  To print 10,000 copies of this it will cost us $2,000 dollars. While in the past we have had to ask people to pay the postage to our distributor, we would like to be able to send out more copies for free, to encourage broader distribution. We are asking for another $2,000 dollars for this. With maximizing our distribution efforts through contacts and friends across the world, we can distribute and mail out almost all of the new issues to anyone interested in distributing it. This leads us to asking for $4,000 dollars. We know this is an ambitious amount, and most likely those supporting us aren’t very wealthy, but it will absolutely secure this project, and help with the expansion of our readership. We hope that reaching out this way will put a dent into that fiscal goal, as our collective members are all working people.

We hope that in returning from our hiatus last year we have re-ignited a feeling of support for this project, and hopefully have reached a new generation of anarchists, revolutionaries, insurrectionists, radicals, and the generally angry and discontent. By taking part in our crowd funding, we also promise to ensure that you will receive copies of the magazine upon its completion.

While we have some content intended for our new issue, we are also very open to new ideas and submissions. We will be happy to hear from you via email at firetotheprisons@riseup.net. You can also read all of our old issues in pdf form on our website at: firetotheprisons.org

We hope to make our next issue another success, and we hope to strengthen a global voice that generalizes resistance and tension to the global order that reigns upon us all.
