Feel the BURN: A DNC Reportback

from It’s Going Down

The protests of the Democratic National Convention came and went leaving many behind, such as myself, confused and bewildered. Most of the confrontations occurred between various sects of the dying left and liberal Bernie supporters seeking to contain or co-opt rage. There were some attempts at direct action and militancy but the entire terrain was uncertain and at times hostile toward any action outside of very controlling notions of “non-violent protest.”

A few instances were somewhat interesting in terms of what is/not possible in the streets during these events given the social forces participating and directing political struggle towards their ends.

Anarchists-at-DNC-Protest-640x480On Tuesday the Black Resistance March, organized by the Philly Coalition for REAL Justice, went down Broad St starting at Diamond. Early on a couple (very obvious) undercovers were kicked out of the rally along with a camera operator. One thing in the past that REAL has shouted about, besides pigs, are reporters. The march was led by a few trucks filled with water and members of REAL Justice and Worker’s World Party (WWP) on megaphones. Early on in the march, things got tense with the largely white Bernie supporters who showed up, when they were asked to fall back behind the banners and in general not march in front of the contingent of black protesters holding those banners. Some cute banners, one reading FUCK 12 END POLICE FOREVER! and another Stop Killing Black People, were scattered through the march. Overall, it was a confused mix of fuck cop signs and pro-Bernie signs.

The march reached City Hall and merged with an even larger contingent of Bernie supporters and pot-smoking hippies. There people milled about for what must have been an hour around City Hall. There seemed to be some disagreement yet again about who would lead. A split group marched ahead and reached the Wells Fargo center, where four people were arrested around 8:30. After some time the WWP march started again from city hall with the trucks in front. This began the plodding “March Against the DNC” with so many stops along the way, to keep the march together both for the purposes of leadership and for the cops to maintain a defined perimeter.

As the march moved south it thinned out and the mood got more tense as it got dark. Still the cops did nothing as an Israeli and American flag were burned near Broad and Oregon on Tuesday for the Black resistance march. But even then self-appointed “peacekeepers,” some of whom wore placards that read “#BeLikeBernie I DO NOT support violence of any kind,” stepped in to try and kill the fun. I heard one person shout that this is not what we’re here for. Who is we?

Another flag was burned in front of the fence to the Wells Fargo center with more complaints from pacifists. The march dispersed from there, many going into the encampment in FDR Park. Two major groups were there occupying space, the Rainbow Family of Light folks and a middle-class Bernie encampment-suburb. There was a stage and a set of screens, which were playing some cartoon. A friend told me it felt like a Jimmy Buffet concert, and it was basically that.

On Wednesday another flag was burned (noticing a theme?) but this time a pacifist got burned trying to stomp out a puddle of lighter fluid! (Fire don’t give a fuck bout you.)  The energy was more intense that night with two actions against the fence, one where Democracy Spring activists tried to pull down the fence. Some were arrested. After that an unaffiliated group of masked demonstrators came at the fence again, this time with bolt cutters. Seven people were arrested in total as far as we know.

Thursday was the last day of the convention and energy felt low. That night, there was a rally again in front of the fence and there was talk of Democracy Spring activists disrupting HRC’s speech on the inside. Another group outside the fence, the DNC Action Committee, held a sign that read “we are pissed and we are peaceful.” I agreed with half of that. The banner holders seemed confused when some voiced disagreement with that statement. Later the same group held a “mock trial” of HRC that was so painful to watch.

Socialist Alternative was also there on megaphones declaring themselves to be the official chant leaders and trying to get people to literally repeat after them. The reason for this co-optation became clear when later a rumor spread throughout the crowd that there were delegates leaving away from where everyone was standing; the action turned out to be a Socialist Alternative rally with some sad Bernie delegates. Food Not Bombs handed out food and masks. This resulted in the image of a 20-something college bro in a tie-dye Bernie t-shirt wearing a black mask and eating a hummus sandwich listening to the live-streamed speeches.

That final image is stuck in my brain as what the entire week felt like: a horrifying simulacrum of modern protest culture, weed and apparently, an Alpaca.

Cop car vandalized during DNC protest

from Mainstream Media

The Philadelphia Police Department would like to know who went all “Harold and His Purple Crayon” on one of their police cruisers during DNC protests Monday in South Philadelphia.

A photo of a Philadelphia Police SUV parked in the middle of a street with a long, squiggly line of red paint along the passenger’s side has been circulating around Twitter this morning.

Sgt. Eric Gripp, police spokesman, said the cop car was parked on the 1100 block of South Broad Street in Point Breeze, along one of the main protest routes, at about 2:30 p.m. When the officers went back to their vehicle 15 minutes later, they discovered the vandalism, Gripp said.

Black DNC Resistance March against Police Terrorism and State Repression

from Facebook

The Philadelphia Coalition for REAL Justice presents:
Black DNC Resistance March against the Capitalist & Racist Government: We Have Nothing To Lose But Our Chains!!

The Democratic Party has consistently betrayed their promises to the Black community and the 2016 presidential election is not going to be any different. The presidential election is the largest electoral process in the country, and the Black community can no longer watch a few control the lives of many. Black communities have been underfunded for centuries. Black communities are under siege with militarized police terrorism, assault and murder; public schools are underfunded and do not properly educate our children; economic development means black displacement through gentrification; prison privatization and the school to prison pipeline; raising the minimum wage to a living standard; the right to proper access of quality healthcare, food, shelter and the essential means of life; protection and inclusion of the LGBTQ community, as well, the releasing of all political prisoners and the right to self-determination and control of our communities. This can only come from the unification of our voices, understanding the intersectional connections, education and support of one another and not the democratic process.

Philadelphia is a historically Black city, as well as the birth of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Both documents have kept the Black community subjugated. The American political system was organized and created by white men who supported and upheld the enslavement of Black people. These documents continue to function under the order of white supremacy and neo-liberal reformists politics. Black liberation cannot occur in a reformist society. White supremacy must be abolished and Black liberation must become a priority.

Police Intimidation Last Night in Lead Up to DNC

from Facebook

“The attack on comrade Rufus Farmer last night was nothing short of the legal snatching of Blk/Brown bodies that occur daily in our communities under police occupation/militarization especially, when recording their interactions. They proved our bodies are nothing to be respected, and we’re just commodities to create more capital in an oppressive system that wants nothing more than to see our blood distributed into the soil like fertilizer.
Rufus Farmer is guilty of nothing short of living while Blk, breathing while Blk, walking while Blk, speaking while Blk, and demanding his freedom, while Blk.
The officer stated to him, “I’m going to take you somewhere there isn’t any cameras.” Which was the back of the precinct, pulled him to his knees on the croncrete, shoved his knee into his chest and throat area, and broke his toe, gave him a bogus citation for $300 and parking ticket for allegedly leaving his car unattended. They stated to him the knew he wasn’t a criminal because they know he’s a “professional protester,” what ever that means.
This happened at the hands of the 25th district, which is one of the two most violent districts in this city, as cited in the 2015 DOJ report, and they lived up to that reputation.
The Kenney administration will not get away with criminalizing citizens with this citation act and the 25th district will see the people’s response, we must all stand in unity when anyone in our activist community have been assaulted, as we know they are the voices of the voiceless, and they speak words that empower all those in hearing distance. The Brown community thanked our comrades for their voices and have already stated they will stand with us in court, with the video footage they have.
And lastly, Rufus Farmer was wearing a Free Mumia Abu-Jamal shirt!”

Hotline starts July 23

Arrest Hotline 484-758-0388

Beginning Saturday, July 23, 2016 throughout the DNC, and after if needed, we will staff a 24 hour arrest hotline.

hotline-blingThis phone hotline will be used by legal observers and protesters to report arrests and incidents of police misconduct. Folks arrested can also call into the hotline to report their own arrest. We will make every effort to contact friends and loved ones of those arrested to keep them informed as to what is happening to folks. We will help direct folks to jails for jail support, and we will track all arrestees through the jails/bail hearings until they are released.

We will be working with the NLG/ACLU organized and trained legal observers (the green hats!) to assist us in reporting arrests and gathering information from potential witnesses/video/photo evidence.

Lawyers are Ready

For folks that are arrested, Up Against the Law has teamed up with approximately 20 private criminal defense attorneys who have agreed to represent protesters arrested during the DNC. These attorneys are some of the best criminal defense attorneys in the city and have been vetted in advance to advocate for activists in the way that activists choose.

Up Against the Law will continue to support anyone post arrest during the DNC by working with the attorneys to gather evidence, maintain contact, and assist with communication between lawyers and activists. This will include post arrest meetings with Up Against the Law and lawyers and making ourselves available to answer simple questions (not legal advise) regarding any pending criminal/civil cases.

WHAT WE DO NOT DO:

We do NOT have a bail fund or post bail for anyone arrested.

We strongly encourage all groups to have their own bail fund. If bail is needed, we are happy to explain the bail process which we do in our trainings. Philadelphia does not use bail bonds. Bail is paid directly to the courts. Bail can be posted 24/7.  Cash only after 5pm, credit/debit cards, cash, certified checks can be used to post bail M-F, 8:00am-5:000pm.

Philadelphia to Host 2016 Democratic National Convention

from mainstream media

The 2016 Democratic National Convention will be held in Philadelphia, party leaders announced Thursday.

Philadelphia beat out two rival cities for the chance to host the party’s nominating convention in July 2016. Both Brooklyn and Columbus, Ohio, were in the running through the final round of the bidding process.
