Clarkville covered in graffiti… again

from mainstream media

Vandals have struck again at Clarkville at 43rd and Baltimore, painting walls and windows and writing “Gentrifiers Go Home” on an outside wall. The restaurant was tagged shortly after its opening in December 2015 in the former Best House Pizza location.

Co-owner Brendan Hartranft scraped paint from Clarkville’s windows on Thursday morning.

“I wish they knew what we were about,” Hartranft, a native Philadelphian, said of the vandals.

Recently opened Clarkville gets tagged

from mainstream media

A reader, Alex, sent us this photo this morning of some graffiti at the recently opened Clarkville bar and restaurant on the corner of 43rd and Baltimore. He writes:

“I went to breakfast at Green Line this morning and noticed Clarkville has been vandalized. Xed out windows, and the messages “merry Christmas ” and “f*** you.” What a shame. I hope the owners can clean it up without too much trouble.”

Some History of Cedar Park Neighbors and the Barn

Submission

Recently the Barn on Baltimore – a newer bar in Cedar Park – and some signs put up by the Cedar Park Neighbors (CPN) group were both vandalized. The Barn had “FIRST WORLD LOUNGE” spray painted across the facade. The signs – which stated “Cedar Park Neighbors Welcomes You” – had paint splattered on them. The Barn and CPN have been criticized for furthering gentrification in Cedar Park.
The building that houses the Barn used to be the home of a bar and club called the New Third World Lounge; Cedar Park Neighbors played an active role in having the place shut down, paving the way for the Barn. CPN spread racist rumors online that portrayed the mostly black clientele of the New Third World Lounge as dirty, drug ridden and criminal. They actively encouraged people in the neighborhood to file complaints against the bar for minor ordinance violations. CPN would follow up by publishing the contact information of the Licensing and Inspection officials in charge of handling the complaints to pressure the city to fine the building owners. As the building owners received more and more negative attention they eventually succumbed and kicked out management of Third World Lounge and eventually invited the current occupiers to create the Barn in its place.
The Barn, though well received by CPN, was heavily criticized by many residents for replacing a nexus of black social activity with a venue that mostly catered to young white transplants. Initially the Barn made attempts to cater to the neighborhood in the same way that the New Third World Lounge but these soon fell to the wayside. Indeed, the Barn has entrenched itself as a watering hole for the creative class.
With these kinds of histories it’s no surprise people are opposing the Barn and Cedar Park Neighbors.

A Reportback from Leif Erikson Day 2015

One People’s Project has a longer report back posted on Idavox (a new news service for Anti-Fascists from the people at OPP), but, yea, they didn’t show up.

Despite KSS co-founder Bob Gaus claiming on social media that LED 2015 would be on Saturday at Noon, as it had been almost ever previous year, when Anti-Fascists mobilized to confront them they were met with some very confused joggers and a Viking statue and gazebo that had been tagged with Anti-Fascist graffiti.

We waited around for a few hours, taunting KSS and Traditionalist Youth on twitter to come and “smash the reds” who were so patiently waiting like sitting ducks, but they demurred.

After it was clear they were not coming, we thanked those that had responded to the call and went to lunch with some new recruits/supporters who had come out to oppose the event where we sat around and talked about how improved the situation was in Philly in the past 4 years. So thanks for that, KSS.

Leif Erickson 2015: Boneheads Sneak Around Again…and Viking Statue Gets Defaced By Who?

from Idavox

Leif Before and After

Let’s face it, antifa scare the hell out of the Keystone State “Skinheads”. So much so, this year’s attempt to hold a “Leif Erickson Day Celebration” without facing them meant having it the night before the time they announced! But something else happened that night that makes us ponder what else might be afoot.

PHILADELPHIA, PA—When antifa went to the Thorafinn Karsefini statue – aka, the “Viking Statue” – on Boathouse Row to oppose an annual rally put on by the neo-Nazi Keystone State “Skinheads” (KSS), they were greeted by the statue tagged with antifascist slogans and symbols – and the neo-Nazis were nowhere to be seen.

Leif Erickson 2015

That is because for the second year in a row, the group held their “Leif Erickson Day Celebration” in a way to avoid the opposition. For the first time in the nine year history of the event, they held it Friday night, and not during the usual time of noon, the time one KSS member actually announced on his Facebook page.

Bill Cosby Mural In Philadelphia Tagged, Then Painted Over

from Colorlines

The infamous “Father’s Day” mural in North Philadelphia, which was slated for expedited removal by the city, has been painted over as of Wednesday. The removal of the controversial mural, which prominently features Philadelphia native Bill Cosby alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela, didn’t happen quick enough to prevent numerous taggings, including one that prominently read “RAPIST.”

In photos provided to Colorlines and several other Philadelphia publications by a city resident who observed the mural’s status over several weeks, the mural’s tags are very prominent. The photo above shows the entire mural, including the other non-Cosby personalities, painted over.

The 2008 mural, which was slated for removal before sexual assault accusations against Cosby grew because of structural deficiencies, had its removal prioritized by the City of Philadelphia in light of mounting evidence that Cosby drugged and raped many women. The mural stood close to Temple University, Cosby’s alma mater; Andrea Constand, whose civil suit against Cosby produced the now-partially-unearthed deposition that has led many former allies to turn against the actor, met Cosby while she was a Temple University employee.
