Philadelphia, USA: Attack on a construction site as part of the month for the Earth and against capital

from Contra-Info

Everywhere the wild is pushing back against civilization. Even in the cities, wildness flourishes in forgotten places, slowly widening the cracks in this civilized order.

On a warm spring night, we went to a construction site where there was once a wild and abandoned place. We did what we could to hinder the progress that has befallen that area: removing survey stakes and dividers, stealing and destroying pieces of what was being built, and smashing the machines that homogenize and commodify the land.

We don’t know what they intend to build on the site and we don’t care. Any domestication of wild places infuriates us.

We took this action as a contribution to the month for the earth and against capital.

Philadelphia, USA: Solidarity to the ZAD of Notre-Dames-Des-Landes

from Contra Info

Today, February 27, we put up posters in downtown Philadelphia in response to the call for a general mobilization against the airport project in Notre Dame Des Landes. The posters explain what the ZAD is and the struggle against the airport. We mostly put posters up on LAZ parking lots and structures. LAZ is owned by Vinci, the same company responsible for building the airport in Notre Dame Des Landes.

Philly residents are throwing snowballs at television reporters

from mainstream media

While the tired, old adage of how Eagles fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus is annoying and overused by the national media when talking about the “personality” of Philadelphians, it is worth mentioning considering what’s happening to television reporters during their coverage of Saturday’s blizzard.

TV news reporters are getting hit with snowballs while reporting on the winter weather.

The Age of Extremes- Climate Change, Terrorism, and Capitalism: A Talk and Discussion with Journalist Arun Gupta

from facebook

Award-winning journalist Arun Gupta, in conversation with Sally Eberhardt, will discuss the state of America on the eve of the 2016 election. In recent years Gupta has gone undercover to police conventions, investigated the migrant crisis in Tijuana, stood on the frontlines of “Blockadia,” uncovered an FBI terrorist-entrapment plot, examined profiteering in the prison industry, traveled through the marijuana industry in California, infiltrated the Tea Party, covered Occupy Wall Street, and told the stories of Iraqi refugees, low-wage workers, and Black Lives Matter activists.

With more hot air than action coming out of the U.N. summit on climate change in Paris, Gupta will explain how terrorism, capitalism, and climate change are interconnected, and why there needs to be credible alternatives to capitalism or most Americans will continue to fall for demagogues like Donald Trump or pro-Wall Street, pro-war Democrats like Hillary Clinton.

Arun Gupta contributes to outlets including the Washington Post, The Nation, In These Times, The Guardian, The Progressive, YES! Magazine, Telesur, ZNet, Counterpunch, and Al-Jazeera America.

This event is free. The space is wheelchair accessible though the bathroom is not.

North Philly Peace Park Fenced In

from facebook

Today [April 10 2015] a fence suddenly appeared around the North Philly Peace Park despite promises from everyone including City Council President Darrell Clarke that a permanent home would be found (and that construction wouldn’t start until September at the earliest). We need people to mobilize to get the word out about what is happening. We complain about gentrification and the marginalization of low income people, well, here’s a chance to actually stop it from happening.

The Peace Park has been providing fresh produce to what is essentially a food desert in the heart of North Philly. Residents in the area and the park itself are being pushed out to make way for a “revitalization project.” The Peace Park is a symbol of community and people power, and the city’s corporate interests are only too happy to destroy it. Please reach out to any media contacts you may have and ask them to contact Tommy Joshua at younghuey@gmail.com for detailed information about this situation. Or, feel free to contact the North Philly Peace Park directly through their facebook page.

A Nuanced Anti-civ Stance

from Deep Green Philly

Regarding some of the contradictions of being anti-civ or critical of industrial society (or, how to negotiate certain “facts on the ground”):

There’s an Upworthy video making the rounds on facebook entitled ‘5 Years’ Worth Of Photos Show How Testosterone Affected One Person’s Life’. This heartwarming video shows a FTM trans person’s journey of self-realization. Of course a medical marvel like this would not have been possible 40 years ago, and yet here’s the thing – it’s not clear if it will be possible 40 years into the future if climate disruption, global warming, and resource wars take the huge toll that many are predicting.
