7:00 PM – 9:00 PMWooden Shoe Books and Records 704 South St

A discussion around the new Verso/Jacobin book Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State by Samuel Stein

Capital City takes a deeper dive into how the capitalist real estate market shapes our cities and the role of urban planners in facilitating ever increasing property values. Reading groups are forming around the city so that folks have the opportunity to read the book and ask questions with other Philly folks committed to housing justice. There is a Facebook group that has event pages for the various reading groups that have formed.

On Monday, May 13th at 6pm, Sam Stein will be visiting Philadelphia to discuss his book and participate in a bigger conversation about what the "real estate state" looks like in Philadelphia and how the various groups addressing the housing crisis's symptoms here can build a shared vision of housing justice. This event will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia (2125 Chestnut St.) in the sanctuary (upstairs). This space is wheelchair accessible and there will be food. The event will start at 6:30pm.

Copies of the Capital are available at the Wooden Shoe for a 20% discount for participants of the various reading groups
