Philly picket of Grassroots campaigns Inc

    9:30 AM - 10:30 PM100 S Broad St

Canvassers working for Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. (GCI), a for-profit nation-wide fundraising organization, have been attempting to unionize for years. GCI is a nominally “progressive” organization that fundraises for the likes of Doctors Without Borders and the Southern Poverty Law Center but has a long track record of union-busting and labor abuse.

Our Seattle office began organizing in the summer of 2017. We won NLRB recognition in March 2018 and signed a collective bargaining agreement in April. Since going public as a union with the Industrial Workers of the World, we have been fighting back against concerted retaliation from the corporate office. We have faced wage theft, an unspoken hiring freeze, sabotaging workers’ equipment, intimidating new hires, and refusal to hire a permanent manager. There were repeated lockouts in June and July, which were openly admitted as retaliation for protected union action. We responded with large pickets in June and an “unfair labor practice” strike from July 27-29, both featuring solidarity actions in cities across North America.

Three days after the strike GCI’s unionbusting lawyer informed our union that the company intends to permanently close the Seattle office, effective August 5, in blatant retaliation for our strike. We are confident that we can apply enough pressure to reopen the Seattle office. In the meantime, GCI’s New Orleans office has recently unionized and will be facing the brunt of the company’s union busting for the foreseeable future. We are not going anywhere, though, and the nationwide solidarity campaign will remain underway.
